The development of drugs that reduce the gastric acidity and reduces the risk of heartburn, has become one of the most important achievements of pharmaceutical industry of the twentieth century. However, these medications if uncontrolled can cause serious consequences.

Just a few decades ago the inhabitants of the world were saved from a painful heartburn with the “reliable old wives ‘funds” – a teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in a glass of water. Meanwhile, this method provides only short-term effect: the decrease in the burning sensation in the esophagus, as a rule, should be even more severe heartburn.

It seemed that the problem was fully solved through the creation of new drugs for the treatment of heartburn, and more serious disorder called gastroesophageal reflux – proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers-histamine receptors.

Such medicines are very popular in all countries because of their low price and OTC status.

On the other hand, in recent years we have accumulated a lot of evidence that the proton pump inhibitors with prolonged use (over several months) can also increase the risk of developing kidney failure, heart attack and even dementia.

It seems that the reasons for this dangerous side effects of popular drugs finally installed – it was done to scientists from the Methodist research Institute in the U.S. city of Houston (Houston Methodist Research Institute).

They were regularly subjected to proton pump inhibitors (PPI) and H2 blockers-histamine receptors in cell cultures of the endothelium, the inner lining of blood vessels.

Some time later, endothelial cells under the influence of drugs group of IIT began to rapidly grow old, as they became in large quantities to accumulate waste products.

Scientists believe that in the arteries of a living organism under the influence of pit perfectly smooth surface of the vessels becomes rough. Because of this, components of blood can stick on the surface and can block the lumen of the vessel with all its consequences.

The authors of the study remind that IIT can take courses lasting 4 weeks each, and throughout the year, such courses must not be more than 3.
