American researchers believe that the existing for many decades, the idea that the gastroesophageal reflux disease causes a chemical burn of the esophagus acidic stomach contents, is fundamentally wrong.

With random single attack of heartburn had to face almost every adult however, when these attacks become regular, you can talk about the development dostarczone serious illness called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

GERD is dangerous primarily to the fact that it causes chronic inflammation of the mucous membrane of the esophagus may cause specific changes in its cells (this condition is called Barrett’s esophagus). And these changes significantly increase the risk of developing cancer of the body.

Until now it was assumed that an almost constant inflammation of the lining of the esophagus in people with GERD, called the impact of the highly acidic contents of the stomach and duodenum, which in this disease is thrown regularly into the esophagus. In other words, inflammation in GERD is supposedly caused by the usual chemical burns of the mucosa.

However, scientists from two U.S. research centers – the University of Texas (UT Southwestern Medical Center) and medical centre at the clinic for veterans of the U.S. armed forces in Dallas (Dallas VA Medical Center) argue that this is the “classic” idea of the physiological mechanism of the development of GERD is absolutely incorrect.

First, the researchers simulated the development of GERD in mice and found that with regular exposure to stomach contents having a very high acidity, the first symptoms appeared only a few weeks after the start of the experiment.
It alarmed scientists, as in the case of a chemical burn its symptoms appear very quickly – within a few hours. The next step in the experiment involved 12 patients with GERD who regularly took drugs (ancientcity), reduces the acidity of gastric juice.

After at the request of the researchers, the participants stopped taking the drugs, 11 of the 12 subjects, the disease resumed, but not immediately, but only after some time. A thorough examination of all participants has allowed scientists to determine that the inflammation of the esophagus arise due to the increased discharge of cytokines in the mucosa, caused by exposure to gastric juice. Cytokines are special proteins that provide the transmission of signals between cells of the immune system.
